Disposable period products generate over 28,000 tonnes of waste in the UK every year. Period products should never be flushed down the toilet, but many are and cause blockages, and pollute rivers and seas. Most disposable period products contain plastic so they do not break down, and need to be landfilled.
There are now lots of re-usable alternatives available. The main options are period pants, washable pads and menstrual cups. You can find out more about these through City to Sea's Plastic-Free Periods campaign.
We want all residents to be able to make the choice of period product that is right for them, so we have several schemes available to save money on re-usable period care. Find out about these on the next page.
